IBA student presents a paper at the EWC 21st Annual International Graduate Student Conference (IGSC)
Mr. Asmat Ullah, an IBA student from the Social Sciences and Liberal Arts Department, School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS), virtually presented a paper on 'Politics and Patronage on the water of Gomal Canal in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan' at the East-West Center (EWC) 21st Annual International Graduate Student Conference (IGSC) organized at the University of Hawai'i, USA, on February 20, 2022.
His ethnographic research sheds light on the traditional way of water management through the lens of environmental anthropology. The study aims to investigate how water as a natural resource seems to belong either to the handful of local political elites, influential landlords or to the farmers possessing land at the head-end while dispossessing farmers at the tail-end from the shared resource. Moreover, the scarcity produced by the upstream farmers or influential stakeholders ends up in year-round disputes between the deprived and the beneficiaries. Such unfair distribution of water and other related resources has changed the dynamics of shared water, thus aggravating crises in the region.
