Session on urban development for informal settlements
The Karachi Urban Lab (KUL) organized a meeting at IBA City Campus, held at the IBA-CEJ, on January 11, 2021, with representatives of various communities that are under threat of displacement across Karachi due multiple infrastructure projects. These include residents of informal settlements located near the city's main drainage channels that are to be upgraded; residents in villages that are to be displaced due to construction of Malir Expressway; residents displaced by the Bahria Town construction; residents displaced by the Karachi Circular Railway revival.
Community representatives and activists shared the on-ground situation and their experiences, trials and expectations in the context of Karachi's violent urban planning and politics. A key objective of this meeting was to share KUL's latest research on land displacement and encourage discussions on anti-displacement/anti-eviction strategies, mapping, community assessment surveys.
