SMCS Conducts Two-Day Workshop on Practical R for Data Analysis, Forecasting, and Machine Learning
June 29–30, 2026: The School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS), IBA Karachi, conducted a two-day workshop titled “Practical R for Data Analysis, Forecasting, and Machine Learning.” The workshop opened with remarks by Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Khoja, Dean SMCS, IBA Karachi, who welcomed the participants and emphasized the value of practical data-analysis skills in teaching, research, and evidence-based decision-making.
The sessions were led by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aslam Asadi, Tenured Professor of Statistics at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan. Dr. Asadi is also the co-author of Practicing R for Statistical Computing, published by Springer, which reflects his work in statistical computing and applied learning through R.
The workshop focused on the practical use of R for data import, cleaning, manipulation, exploratory data analysis, visualization, regression modelling, logistic regression, time-series forecasting, panel data analysis, PCA, clustering, and introductory machine learning. Participants from several institutions attended, including IBA Karachi, University of Karachi, Institute of Business Management, FAST-NUCES, and NED University of Engineering and Technology.
Through this initiative, SMCS continued its efforts to strengthen analytical, computational, and data-driven learning at IBA Karachi. The hands-on exposure to R as an open-source platform for statistical computing, modelling, forecasting, classification, and clustering gave participants practical tools that are directly relevant to modern data science, academic research, and professional analytics.
The event concluded with an interactive discussion led by Dr. Amir Bashir, followed by questions and reflections from the participants.
