SBS organizes a session on 'Electrification of Transportation: Global Trends and Local Developments'

January 08, 2025:IBA-SBS organized a session on Electrification of Transportation: Global Trends and Local Developments by Dr. Shakeel Sadiq Jajja, Associate Professor-Operations & Supply Chain Management & Associate Dean (Graduate Programs), SDSB, LUMS. He highlighted the global shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and Pakistan's potential to adopt this transition. EV adoption is driven by benefits such as transitioning into new industries, energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and lower air pollution. Globally, companies like Tesla and BYD lead EV production, with China dominating the EVs and battery supply chain. In Pakistan, transportation significantly contributes to pollution.

The government has set ambitious EV penetration targets alongside incentives and plans for charging infrastructure. However, challenges include policy fragmentation, limited charging facilities, and dependency on imported components. Emerging opportunities include localized two/three-wheeler manufacturing and pilot programs for electric buses. Pakistan can enhance industrial innovation, reduce fuel imports, and address environmental issues, positioning itself for a sustainable transportation future.
