IBA-SMCS successfully hosted its Undergraduate Orientation 2026

August 18, 2026: IBA School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS) successfully hosted its Undergraduate Orientation 2026 on August 18, 2026, welcoming more than 400 students and parents to the IBA Karachi Main Campus as part of the incoming Class of 2030. The orientation offered students and parents an opportunity to learn more about the BS Computer Science and BS Mathematics programs, with a focus on the first-semester curriculum, academic expectations, learning pathways, and opportunities available at IBA.

The event opened with remarks by Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi, who spoke about the growing influence of technology across diverse fields and domains. He highlighted how technology is increasingly shaping areas beyond traditional computing and encouraged students to develop an interdisciplinary outlook and remain adaptable in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Shakeel A. Khoja, Dean, SMCS, welcomed the incoming students and emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, continuous growth, adaptability, and learning beyond the classroom. He encouraged students to make the most of their university experience and develop a mindset of curiosity and continuous learning.

The program included dedicated sessions on both undergraduate programs. Dr. Shahid Hussain, Chairperson, Computer Science, presented an overview of the BS Computer Science program, including the first-semester curriculum and student opportunities. Dr. Amir Bashir, Chairperson, Mathematical Sciences, provided an overview of the BS Mathematics program, highlighting its first-semester curriculum and the academic and professional opportunities available to students.

The presence of SMCS faculty members and program coordinators further enriched the orientation, as they actively engaged with students and parents throughout the event. A highly interactive Q&A session provided students and parents with an opportunity to raise questions directly with the Dean, Chairpersons, faculty members, and program coordinators. The discussion covered academic programs, courses, learning opportunities, student life, and the transition to university.

The successful orientation reflected SMCS's commitment to helping students and their families begin their IBA journey with greater clarity, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging.
