GUIDED PERSONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT MODEL CONCEPT, THEORY, AND PRACTICE
The inherent complexity of online learning environments and the abundance of resources in these environments cause learners to information-overload, knowledge-deficit, and personalization-related challenges. The recent concept of Personal Learning Environments or PLEs tackles these issues with its integral user-centred design and recommendation, networking and persistent online presence features. This thesis presents the Guided PLE Model—a PLE design and development framework that seeks to improve the recommendation feature of the PLE idea with teachers’ guidance. Guided PLE Model provides a novel Semantic Analysis driven Recommendation System, the SkillsRec Recommender, and a Server-side Web-Browser Services-based PLE application, the GuidedLearn PLE application. SkillsRec Recommender identifies learners’ skills through semantically melding teacher competencies and learner interests and then based on those skills of each learner it generates user-user recommendations. GuidedLearn PLE application is a prototype PLE application that follows the Bottom-up Social Media, Systematic and Human-Computer Interaction Design principles of online learning environments. This thesis proves the applicability and effectiveness of Guided PLE Model through evaluating the SkillsRec Recommender using N=20 usability studies that are conducted on the real datasets of GuidedLearn PLE application.
